A new update has been released for nds-bootstrap, the open-source application that allows you to use Nintendo DS/DSi ROMs and homebrew applications natively, without having to resort to an emulator.

The program works on Nintendo DSi and 3DS SD cards via Custom Firmware and on Nintendo DS via Flashcard.
The standalone version of nds-bootstrap does not require the use of a frontend, as it uses an ini file to load its parameters, although using a frontend is highly recommended.
TWiLight Menu++ serves as a frontend for nds-bootstrap . This frontend offers 7 customizable launchers, including the ability to run emulators and other homebrew.
Additionally, it provides anti-piracy patches for games and automatically configures nds-bootstrap for each individual game, with customizable options.
This new version introduces significant improvements for ROM reading, especially for some games such as Dragon Ball: Origins , Origins 2 and Supersonic Warriors 2 , thanks to the automatic activation of audio and graphic data pre-loading settings.
The Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight title also benefits from these improvements on 3DS.
A significant technical innovation is the ability to use a DSi-exclusive ROM as a “donor ROM” to increase the cluster cache when running DSi-Enhanced games, useful in cases where errors occur due to file fragmentation on the SD card.
If you are using a DSi console, TWiLight Menu++ will automatically set the donor ROM on first boot.
On the bug fix front, an issue has been fixed that caused a crash when attempting to connect to My Pokémon Ranch from a Generation IV Pokémon game due to audio data not being read.
Additionally, a historical bug, present since version 1.0.0, has been fixed that caused Assassin’s Creed II: Discovery to crash when using the “Wanted!” function, preventing the camera from being used correctly.
Installation
- To install nds-bootstrap, download the archive.
- Extract the
.nds
nds-bootstrap files into theroot:/_nds/
. - For TWLMenu++ users , extract the file
.ver
into the folderroot:/_nds/TWiLightMenu/
(only when you are updating nds-bootstrap, as it is included in TWiLight Menu++).
ROM Compatibility
nds-bootstrap supports most DS ROMs, with some exceptions (see the compatibility list ).
- From nds-bootstrap you can enhance your gaming experience with cheats and faster loading times than with regular cartridges (for games that support such features).
- Game saving is supported and will be saved with the extension
.sav
, and.pub
or.prv
for DSiWare. - Anti-piracy patches can be loaded via IPS files, but are not included in the software itself.
- nds-bootstrap also supports many homebrew applications, including games like DSCraft (please check the compatibility list above).
B4DS mode (result of running nds-bootstrap on DS-mode flashcard with locked SCFG or DS Phat/lite):
- It supports some DS ROMs, and you can increase compatibility by inserting a DS Memory Expansion Pak.
- From version 0.50.2 it is also possible to launch Nintendo DSi+Internet, see the list of supported DSiWare titles .
Changelog
Included in TWiLight Menu++ v27.15.1
What’s new?
- DSi/3DS: Added ROM preload settings (automatically enabled) for more games, improving ROM reading:
- Dragon Ball: Origins (audio data)
- Dragon Ball: Origins 2 (audio data)
- Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2 (character sprites and audio data, the latter only on 3DS)
- 3DS: Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight (everything except audio data)
- You can now use a DSi Exclusive ROM or DSiWare ROM as a donor ROM to increase the cluster cache from 6KB (0x17B0) to 12KB (0x3000) when running a DSi enhanced game in DSi mode. This can be useful if nds-bootstrap displays an “An error occurred” message due to ROM cluster fragmentation and you do not want to reformat the SD card to de-fragment it.
- If you are using a DSi, TWLMenu++ automatically sets a donor ROM on first boot.
Bug fixes
- DSi/3DS: Fixed a communications error crash that occurred when selecting any option after connecting to My Pokémon Ranch on Wii.
- The crash was caused by the audio data not being read, as the ROM’s pre-loaded data map was erased after selecting the “Connect to Wii” option in Generation IV Pokémon games.
- DSi/3DS: Fixed a bug present since version 1.0.0 where the “Wanted!” function in Assassin’s Creed II: Discovery would cause a crash with both screens almost completely blank and no DSi/3DS camera image on the top screen.
- Fixed an overlooked bug that prevented DSi-Enhanced ROMs from booting in DSi mode unless a DSi-Exclusive or DSiWare ROM was set as the donor ROM. v2.6.2
