How to Enable MicroSD Reader on Nintendo Switch 2 Without Updating Firmware or Using Express Cards

If you own a Nintendo Switch 2 and want to use a non-Express microSD card , you may have noticed that, by default, the console does not recognize it for installing games or saving data.

Non-Express cards actually only work for importing screenshots and videos, but only if they have already been used previously on a Nintendo Switch .

To activate the microSD reader and make it fully compatible, there is a method that does not require the purchase of new cards or the use of paid software, nor a modified console.

The operation consists of downloading a specific update directly from the console, which serves to “unlock” the reader and allow the use of common cards formatted in exFAT.

This is especially useful for those who want to stay on a low firmware, perhaps waiting for future exploits, and do not intend to update the console.

To proceed, you need a Nintendo Switch 2 connected to the internet, updated to at least version 20.1.5. You also need a microSD card of at least 64 GB and a USB adapter to connect it to the PC.

You start by formatting the card in exFAT: insert it into the reader, open “This PC”, right-click on the corresponding drive, select “Format”, set the file system to exFAT and the allocation size to “default”.

Once the formatting is complete, eject the card and insert it into the console, which must be turned off.

At this point, turn on the console. A message will appear that can be closed with the Home button. By entering the settings, you access the “Data Management” section and then “Manage screenshots and videos”, where you select the option “Import from a microSD card of a Nintendo Switch console”.

When prompted, the process starts, which will cause the console to download a small update specifically to enable support for the card. After rebooting, the operation is repeated to verify that the console correctly recognizes the card, even if it does not contain data to import.

Once compatibility is confirmed, the card can be removed. To prevent the console from updating again in the future, it is advisable to delete all saved internet connections in the “Internet Settings” menu, then activate airplane mode for added security.

You can still enable Bluetooth and NFC to continue using the Joy-Con and amiibo.

With this procedure, the Nintendo Switch 2 ‘s microSD reader is also enabled for non-Express cards, without requiring full system updates or invasive modifications.
