Developer illusion0001 has recently introduced a new pull request called “Load ShellUI Plugin” in the official HEN plugin repository for PlayStation 4 , proposing an advanced system to manage and customize the console’s user interface.

Once loaded via a HEN payload (e.g., hen.bin
), the plugin will create a configuration file, hen_settings.xml
, in the /data/hen/shellui_data
.

This file defines options that are then displayed in the console’s settings menu, allowing users to customize some features after jailbreaking.
The plugin sits alongside tools like PPPwn , an exploit used to jailbreak PS4s, and requires a network connection (Wi-Fi or wired) to work.
It also generates kernel logs (klog) to aid debugging, initially saved to /user/temp/
and later moved to /data/hen
to ensure their persistence across a console reboot.
The plugin has been tested primarily on firmware 9.00, with promising results, but requires further testing on other firmware versions.
Firmware 9.00
- Status: Confirmed to work. The plugin automatically creates the file
hen.ini
orhen_settings.xml
if not present, and the new configuration options appear in the PS4 settings menu. The main files (.prx
andversion.txt
) must be placed in/data/hen/plugins
, whilehen_settings.xml
is located in/data/hen/shellui_data
.
Firmware 6.72
- Problem: Several systematic crashes have been reported. After loading the plugin, a notification appears stating a UI restart (“ShellUI will be restarted in 5 seconds”), followed by a black screen and the console shutting down after about 30 seconds.
- Technical details: Kernel logs reveal a critical error (App Crash: PID=0x3f, reason=0xb), suggesting a problem with memory management or interaction with firmware. Configuration files are created correctly, but the crash persists.
- Fix attempts: Developer illusion0001 has released several builds (b22, b36, b41, b48, b50), but the issue has not been resolved yet. One possible suggestion was to save logs in
/data/hen
instead of/user/temp/
, since the latter directory is deleted on reboot. This change was implemented in build b50.
Firmware 11.00
- Problem : Similar to firmware 6.72, a black screen is reportedafter rebooting the UI, followed by a system software error when trying to access the settings menu.
- Obstacles : Using PPPwn over a PPPoE connection appears to complicate switching between Wi-Fi and cable, causing further instability.
