A quick update has been released for the remaster of Katawa Shoujo on PlayStation Vita consoles , the popular visual novel released in 2012, which includes a plethora of improvements, bug fixes, and new features without compromising the creative vision of the original title.

This new version introduces video support, a new feature that enriches the visual experience while maintaining the narrative and stylistic sensibility of the original title intact.

In the initial release of Katawa Shoujo r7 , four expansions were developed to enrich the gaming experience. Here is a brief description of each of them:

The Dream of a Little Star : This is a story set in an alternate universe. This expansion demonstrates the capabilities of the Ren’Py game engine and offers a unique perspective on the world of Katawa Shoujo.
Summer’s Clover : This mod became infamous in the past years, when modding Katawa Shoujo was not legally allowed. It represents a piece of history in the fan mod landscape and can be an interesting trip down memory lane for those who followed the modding scene.
Learning to Fly – Act 1 : This is a newer mod, developed with the goal of adapting to higher resolutions and with prospects for future development. It offers new adventures and stories to explore in the world of Katawa Shoujo.
pXt : This mod is the only one made directly by the original developer, Four Leaf Studios (4LS). Being developed internally, it represents a special addition to the expansion list.

Mods are distributed as .rpaseparate files and can be loaded by simply placing them in the /gamemain game directory.

It is also important to note that the source files for the mods are included, and the “Learning To Fly” expansion has annotations available to provide a more complete experience.

Additional Notes and Module Installation

Ren’Py 7 , the game engine used for Katawa Shoujo r7 , required some modifications to fit within the PlayStation Vita ‘s 350 megabyte RAM limit .

Among these changes, the language files have been separated into individual modules. To change the language of the game, you need to download the desired language archive and replace the base-lang.rpaand files base-script.rpain the directory /game. However, it is not recommended to load more than one language pack at a time.

Also, if you add expansions to the game, the amount of available RAM decreases. To avoid problems with more demanding expansions, the file base-script.rpais separated from the directory /game.

By moving it out of this directory, the main game script will be freed from memory and you will be able to play the expansions without any problems. It is important to remember to restore the file to its original location after you are finished.

Another problem related to the size of the persistent file is the increase in memory errors. Most of this file contains information about the text displayed during the game.

Accordingly, there are two options to handle this situation. You can automatically download the data on each save and not record the displayed text.

This option, along with the “Skip unread text” feature, is enabled by default to prevent the game from becoming unplayable due to a persistent file that is too large.

Alternatively, you can manually download this data if you want to record the displayed text to complete the game.

This should be done about once for each path through the game. The controls for managing these options are found in the “Accessibility Options” screen.
