NVIDIA has announced the new GeForce RTX 5050 graphics card , designed as an affordable option for gaming desktops and laptops, with support for ray tracing and DLSS 4 technology with Multi Frame Generation.
The desktop version will start at $249 and will come with 8GB of GDDR6 video memory, an unusual choice given the more efficient GDDR7 found on laptops. The desktop GPU will use up to 130W of power and will integrate 2,560 CUDA cores based on the Blackwell architecture .
The cards will be produced by partners such as Asus, Gigabyte, MSI and Zotac, with shipments expected in the second half of July. Nvidia Game Ready drivers will be updated in early July to support the new model.
The laptop variant of the RTX 5050 will instead have 8GB of GDDR7 VRAM, will consume between 35 and 100 watts, and will be available in models starting at $999, some starting today.
Laptops released before the official driver release will still include the necessary drivers pre-installed. Choosing GDDR7 improves energy efficiency and allows for a thinner design that is less prone to overheating.
While the desktop spec is theoretically more powerful, the use of GDDR6 and a reduced number of CUDA cores compared to the RTX 5060 (a whopping 1,280 fewer) will limit its performance.
Nvidia says the RTX 5050 will be able to deliver an immersive ray-traced experience in games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Avowed , hitting over 150 fps with DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation enabled. However, these results are based on testing with a $479 AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU at 1080p resolution.
The RTX 5050 directly replaces the RTX 3050 , one of the most popular cards on Steam , filling the void left by the lack of a desktop RTX 4050 in the previous generation.
