A quick update has been released for akmenu-next , one of the most valid alternatives to TWiLight Menu++ , the popular open-source menu for launching applications on DS and 3DS consoles.

This frontend for nds-bootstrap , based on the WoodRPG 1.25 GUI , allows for a Wood UI-style experience on many flashcarts and natively on DSi and 3DS.

Akmenu-next includes all the features of WoodR4 , such as save slot support, customizable themes, a favorites section, and a cheat system.

Games are loaded using nds-bootstrap , the same loader used by TWiLight Menu++ . It also supports autoboot on many flashcarts and includes automatic AP patching, thanks to the patches built into nds-bootstrap.

It also features a PassMe loader to run Slot-2 flashcart in DS mode. It is also compatible with Acekard and WoodR4 themes and supports cheat databases usrcheat.dat.

With this update, the main change is that nds-bootstrap is no longer included directly in the akmenu-next package . This choice was made to avoid users being stuck on obsolete versions of the loader, encouraging them to always download the latest version.

As a result, the installation guides have been updated and now clearly indicate how to download the latest version of nds-bootstrap separately .

Cheats

Visit the DeadSkullJr cheat database download page .
Download the file usrcheat.7z.
Extract the file to get usrcheat.dat.
Place the file usrcheat.datin the folder _nds/akmenunext/cheats/.
Make sure the “Cheat in Game(AR)” option is enabled in settings, under the “Patches” section .

Themes

Supported themes are Acekard and WoodR4 themes. These can be downloaded from the Acekard themes section of GBATemp or from the Sanrax kernel theme repository .

To install a theme, download the theme and extract it so that it contains a folder with the files inside. Place this folder in the _nds/akmenunext/ui/.

Make sure the theme is not a folder inside another folder. You can then change the theme in the settings.

Question: How to do a soft reset or exit to return to the menu?
Answer: To do a soft reset or return to the menu, the user must use the nds-bootstrap key combination: L + Down + Select.

Question: Which flashcarts is it compatible with?

Question: Does this mean you have Wood R4 on your flashcart/DSi/3DS?

Question: Can I run DSiWare on akmenu-next?
Answer: Currently, this feature is not supported, even on the DSi and 3DS systems, but it is planned for the future.

Question: Twilightmenu++ already has a Wood theme, what is the advantage of akmenu-next?
Answer: Although Twilightmenu++ has a Wood theme, akmenu-next is a separate project based on the source code of akmenu4, which is the interface used by WoodRPG and later Wood R4. This project allows for many of the features of Wood R4, combined with the compatible nds-bootstrap loader, for a closer to the real Wood experience on flashcart, DSi or 3DS.

Question: Can I use akmenu-next with Twilightmenu++ on a DSi or 3DS?
Answer: On a 3DS, akmenu-next can be used with Twilightmenu++ without conflict, as the _nds folders are shared.
On a DSi, however, the user must be careful not to overwrite the BOOT.NDS file required by Twilightmenu++. If you plan to use both, you should only copy the akmenu-next.dsi file and boot it via Unlaunch or Twilightmenu++. This is explained in the guide.
For a flashcart, you should rename the included BOOT.NDS file and boot it with your existing kernel.

Question: How to use a nightly build of nds-bootstrap on this?
