Sony recently announced a new system software update for the PlayStation 5 console , which will begin its global rollout tomorrow, April 24, 2025.
This update introduces two highlight features: the new “audio focus” function and the return of UI customizations inspired by classic PlayStation consoles .
The “audio focus” feature is designed to increase immersion during gameplay by focusing on amplifying specific sounds that can often go unnoticed, such as footsteps, the rustling of grass, or voices in dialogue and party chats.
This mode is activated exclusively when using headphones connected via analog jack or USB and offers users the ability to choose between four amplification presets: one for bass, one for vocals, one for treble and another for low-volume sounds.
Additionally, you can adjust the amplification level for each type of sound, and even balance the left and right audio channels separately, ensuring a customized experience.
However, this feature has one limitation: it is not compatible with HDMI connections, so it will not work with TVs, soundbars or AV receivers that use this type of connection.
Another interesting element of this update sees the return of graphical customizations for the PS5 home screen, inspired by PlayStation consoles of the past .
This option, initially introduced as a limited edition to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the series, allows you to choose between four graphic themes that pay homage to the historic consoles: PlayStation (PS1), PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.
Now, this functionality becomes a stable and permanent feature, accessible directly from the settings menu under “Appearance”, allowing users to customize the interface with a touch of nostalgia.
The update reflects Sony ‘s commitment to responding to gamers’ wishes, combining technical improvements like audio focus with nostalgic elements that celebrate PlayStation ‘s long history .
The global rollout, which will begin on April 24, 2025, will be gradual, ensuring that all PS5 owners can benefit from these new features in the days following launch.
