Released a new pre-release of UIX Lite, a collection of patches and scripts revisited for the Xbox Original console Dashboard 5960, which are based on traditional changes and patches instead of editing the source code.
This project represents a careful modern and open source reworking of patches and mods made in the past by other members of the Xbox community.
The ultimate goal is to provide a set of distributable patches and legal and open source tutorials to simplify the use of such changes.
However, it should be noted that executing these changes requires a previously modified Xbox console, and the project does not include additional features such as FTP servers or web servers.
This new version introduces numerous updates to XIP code, configuration and securities launcher, as well as a new skin subsystem.
With this release, the team decided to delete the term “ultra” from the name and start the process of merging the two projects.
The UIX Lite’s XBE is currently a modified version of the 5960 retail dashboard, with patches for F/G partition support and, for users using CerBIOS, F-2/G-2.
Among other news, icons have been introduced in the game launcher, although they require manual changes by the user.
The release also includes numerous contributions and tests by BigJx, which also curated minor updates, bug fixes and the project rebranding from UIX Ultra Lite to UIX Lite.
What is UIX Lite
As noted above, UIX Lite is a collection of XIP patches and edits that add some of the features of UIX to Microsoft’s standard 5960 dashboardMicrosoft. Some of these features include:
- A customizable launcher to start the titles from the Xbox hard drive.
- The ability to customize the elements of the main menu.
- An option to select the style of the tHc Main Orb.
- The definition of up to four titles for the QuickLaunch.
- Change the Xbox Live element to display “Insignia”.
- All configuration changes can be made directly in the dashboard via Settings ? Configuration.
Installation
- Since UIX Lite is nothing more than a patch for MS Dash, you need to have a full and working copy of MS Dash 5960 installed in the root of the C partition before attempting one of the following two methods.
How to Do (Pre-Patch)
- DO NOT USE ON A NOT MODIFICATE XBOX. It will not work and you risk irreparably damaging your Xbox console. Make sure you have a modchip or softmod installed that does not depend on the dashboard files to boot.
- DO NOT CANCEL THE OWN ORIGINAL FILE OF DASHBOARD MS. REPLACE ONLY THE FILE EXISTING WITH THE MODIFIED FILE. STORE ANY DOES NOT MODIFICATE.
- Download the latest version of
xboxdashdata.185ead00-vXXXXXX.zip
from assets in the pre-patch version. - Extract and copy files from the 5960 pre-patch dashboard via ftp to the root of the Xbox console’s C partition.
How to Do (Manual)
- DO NOT USE ON A NOT MODIFICATE XBOX. It will not work and you risk irreparably damaging your Xbox console. Make sure you have a modchip or softmod installed that does not depend on the dashboard files to boot.
- DO NOT CANCEL THE OWN ORIGINAL FILE OF DASHBOARD MS. REPLACE ONLY THE FILE EXISTING WITH THE MODIFIED FILE. STORE ANY DOES NOT MODIFICATE.
- Download Visual XIP from the tool page.
- Copy unmodified 5960 dashboard files to a director on your computer.
- Create a folder in that directory called “UIX Configs” and insert
config.xbx
and andIcons.xbx
Inside. - Use Visual XIP or Binary Patcher to patch
xboxdash.xbe
to allow modified xips and add support for F and G partitions. - Use Visual XIP or WinXip to edit xips in your directory
xboxdashdata.185ead00
with the source files updated from the GitHub repository. - Copy the files of the dashboard 5960 “modified” via ftp to the root of the Xbox console’s C partition.
Configuration and use
- Users can customize the Main Menu, the Launcher Menu, and other settings in the dashboard by navigating to Settings ? UIX Settings.
- When setting up the Main Menu, advanced users can enable Advanced Mode. In this mode, selecting a setting opens the Xbox on-screen keyboard for a custom insertion, instead of using built-in toggles.
- During the Launcher configuration, you can define both the “Title” for a type of content and its “paths” for the content for up to eight elements of the Launcher menu. The Launcher will scan the relevant paths provided on each partition and compile a list of the subfolders found. The name of these subfolders should match the title name and contain the title default.xbe. It is recommended to use a semicolon as a separator when defining multiple related paths for similar content.
- You can quickly scroll through most menus by pressing Left/Dright on the directional pad for PageUp/PageDown.
- To relaunch a recently started title, just press the X button while you are in the Launcher menu.
- You can assign a QuickLaunch path to each of the A, B, X and Y buttons. To activate the QuickLaunch function, while you are in the Main Menu, you must press both triggers and press the assigned button.
Note: The Xbox on-screen keyboard does not allow you to insert an empty text string. Therefore, to delete an entrance, simply enter an “x” and select Done.
Note: The on-screen keyboard on the Xbox is limited to 31 characters. So, if you need more characters, enter as much as possible and select Done. Then you can edit it again and part of the text will be moved to the title bar where you can add more text.
Language support
- You can add translations in German, French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese by placing the optional file
xlate.xbx
in the folderC:\UIX Configs
. . - It does not currently support CJK characters.
