David Buchanan , known online as retr0id , recently revealed the first userland ROP chain-based exploit for the Nintendo Switch 2 console , reporting the discovery of a critical vulnerability just after the console’s launch on June 5, 2025.
This finding comes as a surprise to many, especially when contrasted with previous reports, such as TwistedVoxel ‘s on June 1, which described Nintendo’s new console as being heavily protected against modifications and exploits thanks to advanced security measures.

Buchanan’s exploit, while not yet involving native code execution, operates entirely in userland and still represents a concrete first step towards potential future developments in the field of hacking and homebrew.
The discovery inevitably brings to mind the history of the first Nintendo Switch , which was also initially considered safe but then vulnerable, as demonstrated by the “jamais vu” exploit discussed on Reddit as early as January 2018 .
Buchanan’s work includes a limited graphical demonstration of the framebuffer, showing a small animated square in the corner of the screen: a pointless but useful test to demonstrate effective manipulation of the system, although it may appear to be just a simulated video.
The exploit will not be publicly documented until it is patched by Nintendo , or until a second, more advanced stage is discovered, which the author considers unlikely in the short term.
Attention to this achievement is also increased by the console’s high price, equal to $449.99, and the perceived value of launch bundles such as Mario Kart World , elements that could fuel the interest of hackers.
