Developer Zecoxao has recently released Pkgdec5 , an advanced software tool designed to extract and decrypt metadata contained in PlayStation 5 console SC PKG packages .
This is the evolution of an old tool called “pkgdec”, originally developed by RedEyeX32 for PS4 , now adapted to work with the latest PS5 architecture and protections.

The main goal of this tool is to allow for in-depth analysis of official packages, which may include games, updates, and other system content, all without having to install them directly onto the console.
Pkgdec5 operates on RSA-encrypted packets (specifically, the “entry 3” keys) and also supports the SHA3-256 hashing algorithm , recently introduced by Sony to improve data security.
With this update, the tool is able to verify the integrity of the extracted metadata, ensuring reliable analysis.
However, in order to function properly, it requires access to the correct RSA keys, which can only be obtained through exploits on vulnerable firmware or through community collaboration.
Once the SC PKG file and appropriate keys are entered, Pkgdec5 locates the encrypted sections, performs decryption, verifies data integrity, and outputs the information contained in the metadata.
This can include file names, paths, required firmware versions, access permissions, and other technical information. This data is essential for homebrew developers, vulnerability researchers, or enthusiasts interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the PS5 system architecture.
It should be noted that using Pkgdec5 carries some limitations and risks : it cannot be used without active exploits, it may violate Sony ‘s terms of service, and if used improperly, it may expose users to the risk of bans or legal consequences.
Despite this, the tool’s release was met with enthusiasm by the scene, representing a further step towards the analysis and technical understanding of the PS5 ecosystem.
